Canapés and Cock-Ups for Phoebe Cripps

February 13th, 2015 by Rob Brown

canapes and cock

A spectacular typo and evidence, if it were needed, of the decline of the sub-editor. Caterer Phoebe Cripps was featured in the Suffolk Free Press in anrticle about her venture specialising in canapés and cocktails not, er well, you can see for yourself.  She has seen the funny side, tweeting “What could only be described as an unfortunate printing error…. #foodtruck #Suffolk #vintage #catering”.

However there may be an upside for Phoebe as she’s about to be famous and that might be good for business – we have it on good authority that the Daily Mirror is planning a piece about the cock-up.

Great piece Rob. I think it’s only fair to suggest that you could also benefit from a good sub. This line possibly needs some attention:-

“…Phoebe Cripps was featured in the Suffolk Free Press in anrticle about her…”

    ahem…;-)

Sorry! Couldn’t resist! Your basic point is well made though.

Martin – you are so right. If there was a competition for the world’s worst proof reader I’m there.

  3. Presuming Ed Says:

Yar, it’s happened because of the arm cut-out… the subhead probably had a white background so it was slightly covering her arm; instead of just making the box transparent, the sub has either shortened the subhead box (too much) or set it behind the cut-out without turning off the runaround…

Still I bet she got a LOT of calls after this story… 😉

Mmm, you bemoan the “decline of the sub-editor” but, if it’s anything like my most recent paper, you can bet the sub who made the above had to churn out 20+ pages that day :/ …and no-one had time to proof-read it… I was correcting headline errors made by the EDITOR 😮
